Guitar Mikey & The Real - Thing Out of the Box (Earwig Records)
wasser-prawda.de - May 9, 2012

Gerhard Pramor (English Translation)

Earwig Records believes to owe an explanation for publishing an album like "Out of the Box" with an obvious blues-rock influence. This is by no means necessary. Guitar Mikey's debut on this label with guests like Billy Gibson on the blues harp is truly blues-infected. And it rocks at times like the old Led Zeppelin, when they still were a genuine blues-rock band, only that this Canadian injected a generous dose of Mississippi water into their veins.

The biography of Mike McMillan alias Guitar Mikey could also be published as a travelogue. Born in Canada, the singer and guitarist has moved farther and further south to play his blues-rock. Meanwhile since 2006, he lives in the center of the blues, Clarksdale, Mississippi. And even if he may see himself as blues-rocker, he does not want to simply be thrown into the box of the material carried on this label.

"Out of the Box" (altogether his third album) states this with 15 original and extensively diverse songs. While a reference to Led Zeppelin may be apparent, and even if some Funk may hit, altogether all these songs are more blues than the majority of other blues-rock releases of the last months. For him the rock in blues-rock must always have a reason. The pure excess of testosterone in the organism, or the longing for a next and dodgy guitar solo is not enough for him. Ok, his guitar can hit, powerful and hard. And when Billy Gibson blows his harp, then you get more than simple whitewash. Yet in the center are songs strongly rooted in the feel and groove of the Mississippi-Delta, and not in British youth renditions of the 60s and 70s. Memphis-Soul is also felt occasionally ("When Leo Starts To Growlin'") and fired up by an invited horn section of powerful guest players. What else can I say? Oh yes, the name of Guitar Mikey's band is "The Real Thing". And this is by all means accurate. The group is so attuned to each other, even after computer processing; the full dynamics are strongly felt.

Highlights of the overall successful album are the opener "Back to You" with his mandolin intro, the increasingly stronger grooving rocker in "Who Is She", and the unabashed sexy appearing "Heart Shakin' Mama". And "She Needs Time" is also a must-listen where Mikey sings a duet with his backup vocalist Nellie "Tiger" Travis.

Muss man noch was sagen?
