Guitar Mikey & The Real Thing

Earwig CD 4965 (70:32)

Blues & Rhythm Review (UK) - Aug, 2012
by Norman Darwen

Canadian born Michael "Guitar Mikey" McMillan, now resident in Clarksdale, Mississippi by way of Boston and Chicago, plays what he described as a hybrid blues, by which I guess he is referring to the way several tracks here are more rock oriented than blues - though there is nothing here to offend lovers of contemporary blues on this all original 15 track CD, even if the title track is a curious mix of 80s pop, blues and tango. On some of the more straightforward blues numbers, he enlists people such as Bob Margolin (an excellent Muddy-styled 'The Bigger Fool'), Super Chikan, bassist Terry "Big T" Williams, excellent harpman Billy Gibson and pianist David Maxwell, and four numbers have Nellie "Tiger" Travis helping out on vocals. This one is definitely a grower…
