Guitar Mikey And The Real Thing
Out of the Box
(Earwig, 70:34)

Blues News Germany - Oct, 2012
Gerhard Pramor (English Translation)

Michael McMillan a.k.a. Guitar Mikey does not do things half way.   With this CD he wants, if not all, certainly an awful lot as can be clearly heard.   Fiery rock guitars and carefully set accents in the acoustic passages, horn tinctured and funky soul blues with conventional honky-tonk piano, aggressive explosions directly targeting the ear canals and an absolutely delicate adaptation from the classicist Robert Johnson.   The field of McMillan's labor is wide for sure, and the CD truly holds various excitements, yet in other places it appears not just revved up, but over-revved.   This may be because of McMillan's style as guitarist who not seldom bluntly rages, indulging in the spectacular sound, but on the other hand is also responsible for highly charming songs like the even tango oriented title song of the album.   Surely the greatest plus of the album is hereby stated, namely the compositions.   These are truly not from bad parents and only rarely satisfied with basic pedigreed blues, but rather follow a song's schema to repeatedly explore new possibilities.   "Out Of The Box" is therefore a diversified album with plenty of worthwhile material, but also with a - not always, but yet sometimes - grating guitar sound of nerve wrecking aggressiveness that some listeners may need to get used to.
