Clarksdale Press Register - April 15 2009
By VIRGINIA SCHAFER
Local Musician Michael McMillan, also known as Guitar Mikey was the guest speaker at St. George's Episcopal Day School recently. Fifth and sixth grade students from Presbyterian Day School were also in attendance.
Mikey not only entertained the students with samples of Delta Blues guitar music but also discussed the blues and how it began. He told the children about the original Juke Joints and followed the origin of popular forms of today's music through the blues and the guitar. His wife, Pamela McMillan, read excerpts from the book by Julius Lester called "The Blues Singers- Ten Who Rocked the World". The students were especially interested in the local favorite, Muddy Waters. The children who helped Guitar Mikey in his presentation went away with a 'Guitar Mikey' autographed guitar pick.
The McMillans , originally from Canada, first visited Clarksdale because of their love of the blues and the Clarksdale's music scene, but decided to move here from the Boston area, when they found the people of Clarksdale to be so friendly and it felt like "home".
Guitar Mikey performs his high energy show regularly at Ground Zero, in Clarksdale as well as festivals in the local and other areas. If you've never seen his act, treat yourself! Guitar Mikey and the Real Thing were the headline performers at Foley, Alabama's First Annual Blue's Festival in March.
During the Juke Joint Festival for Guitar Mikey at Hicks on State Street. He will also be hosting the Thursday night Jam at Ground Zero Blues Club..
